Image Bank

Image Bank

The following series of images are all related to the work I want to produce.

These images were taken by John Davies, he can influence my work because he shows how buildings have taken over land use, the main focus of his work is the new and old buildings that have been built. I like how his work is documented in black and white as it gives a depressing effect and shows how he also believes that the buildings within the land gives a negative effect. There are various places within London and outside of London that I can visit which can give me similar outcomes to the images that he produces. The football stadiums that have been converted can link to his work, the old Arsenal stadium at highbury park was converted into flats, the new Arsenal stadium is very modern and the Tottenham stadium is being covered too. Also within his images there are train tracks and power stations which I can also visit.

This images are taken by Helene Binet, she documents land use by taking pictures of buildings in an abstract way. Her images are very different to the previous photographer John Davies but by researching her images it gives me a wider representation of land use. I also like her use of black and white effects because it adds more details to the buildings and draws attention to them rather than focusing on the colours. The abstractness of her work makes the buildings seem as though they aren't buildings and shows them in a different way to how we would normally see them. The main technique of her work is taking the images from a low point to capture how the buildings look abstract, I can use this technique within my work as well. In her images there is no presence of the sky because it would again draw the attention away from the buildings, she uses filters either on the camera and on photoshop to make the sky look completely black or white which also adds significance to the buildings. I can also use this effect within photoshop to manipulate some of my images.

These images were taken by Eric De Mare, he documents land use by taking images of buildings using up the land. His images are very similar to John Davies images because they both document images of power stations and transport tracks to show how land is used. His images are also displayed in black and white like both of the previous photographers, this also adds a depressing effect as these buildings are not necessarily beautiful and do not compliment the nature. The majority of the images that I am incorporating within these images show an architectural element which is what De Mare focuses on. His work also relates around industrial sites which I can link in with my work because it shows a form of land use because mostly everywhere you go there are industrial sites and building work going on. In the modern day there are many buildings being converted and new buildings being created.

These images were taken by Ezra Stoller, he uses architectural photography to document land scape. His work is similar to the Henele Binet but his work doesn't take a abstract approach, it is very clear that these are buildings. His work includes very modern buildings which I can present in my work because there are modern buildings all around London and buildings that are being converted. The black and white effect in this case doesn't present a depressing effect it just draws attention to the details of the buildings more because we are not distracted by colour. In the second image a vignette is created because the bottom section of the image is a lot darker than the top of the image, the top of the image is the brighter and more significant part. I can achieve this effect by taking my images into Photoshop.

These images were taken by Gabriele Basilico, his images combine architectural work with land use because he documents old and new buildings but also documents modern buildings too. His work is similar to John Davies in the sense that he compares old with modern buildings but he also incorporates Helene Binet's idea of buildings into his work. His work focuses on landscapes which links to the exam title land use as he shows how land is used around France. He also documents crossroads which links to land use because it shows how land has been converted into transport access. Within my work I believe that I am going to use a black and white effect because it adds more detail to the buildings that I am focusing on, he uses black and white to present his work but unlike others his effect doesn't include a depressing atmosphere as he uses lighter tones rather than darker tones. The use of darker and lighter tones within a black and white image can effect the atmosphere of the image which i can experiment with in my work.

These images were taken by the American photographer Jack Boucher, he uses black and white images to express land use. His images were taken in the late 1900s, I chose to look at a photographer who took images a long time ago because the land use during this time can be compared to the land use of this time. Previously, there wasn't that many buildings and train tracks and this can be shown in his work. When comparing his work with mine I am hoping that the link between modern day land and old land is visible. Boucher documented the highs and the lows of architecture within America, this is visible in his work as he documents buildings and architecture that can be seen as positive and negative, for example train tracks can be seen as positive because they bring transport to the country and old demolished houses can be seen as a negative because they do not look inviting. His work is similar to that of John Davies, I can incorporate both of these photographers work within my work.

These images were taken by the photographer Ian Egner, the main focus of his photography that I have looked at is his use of light trails I want to use this idea within my work. His idea of using light trails relates to land use because it shows how land is used for transportation such as busy roads. The different scale of light trails that he used show how busy the roads are and the types of traffic that is shown. By looking at this photographer it gives me a chance to experiment with my camera settings because light trails are formed with different speeds of the shutter, when changing the shutter speed it gives a different scale of light trails which is what I can experiment with in my work. There are also different effects that can be placed of these images such as colour changes on the light trails.

These images were taken by the photographer Ansel Adams, in his images he focuses on the use of the zone system to create atmospheres in the pictures he takes. His images link to land use because it shows how the land is used in modern ways, his landscape images are all related to nature but these images above show how man-made land uses come into his work. With regards to his use of tones he used darker tones to create a negative atmosphere which I have interpreted by looking at the man-made uses in negative ways, the lighter tones are portrayed in a opposite way with positive effects. I think Adams work would have a big effect on the way I take and edit my images because he shows the different ways a picture can be portrayed. His ideas all link to land use and his use of the zone system is the main factor in why I am looking at this photographer.

These images were all taken by the photographer Martin Dietrich, his work is focused on abstract minimalistic and geometrical nature including strong leading lines and shapes. As a whole his work combines street photography and architectural photography which are the main factors that I am looking at in my work. The main element within his work that enabled me to research him was his idea of the double exposure effect. I think this effect will work nicely within my work because it will enable me to take images in rural and urban landscapes and then merge them together using this effect. This will also help me create different computer experiments and show how I am refining and developing my work. His work can also be related to land use because he focuses on architectural photography which shows how buildings are related to land use, he also uses street photography which can be related to land use because it shows how land is used within the street landscape. There are several elements I can take from this photographer which is why these images all relate to what I want to produce within my work.

These images were taken by the photographer Guillaume Amat, he tells a story through his images and tries to create poetry through his images. In his photography he uses mirrors and boards within the landscape which show a different approach to what we are looking at. I think this is a good idea to use within photography because it gives us an idea of the wider landscape. If I was going to use this idea within my work I would use the board as an idea because he is able to photoshop any image he wants onto the board. I like the idea of the beach image where he has put a contrasting image onto the board, the beach landscape and the image on the board a very different showing a range of landscapes. His work can be considered very cliche but it tells a story and I like his idea of using images that contrast each other which is what I want to produce within my work.

Shoot 1 Work Record

In my first shoot I am going to document landscapes within Waltham Abbey, there is a small football stadium which can be linked to the sport side of land use. There are also other aspects that I can photograph such as an allotment site and a graveyard. 11th Feb

Shoot 2 Work Record

In my shoot 2 I am going to travel to Tottenham football stadium in white heart lane because they are building and making the ground bigger. This links to land use because it shows how the land is being built on constantly, it also links to the sport aspect of land. 18th Feb

Land Use

Photographers

John Davies

John Davies is one of Britain's most famous photographers because of his research on British industrial landscape. His research links him to this exam title because he explores how Britain uses land to build industrial sites.

In this black and white image we can see a power station in the middle of a field. Davies has chosen to document this image in black and white to emphasise how this power station has negatively affected the landscape. In the middle ground of the image we can see people playing football, this can add to how the power station affects the landscape negatively, it was originally a beautiful family friendly place and now it has been made ugly and uninviting. This image links to the exam topic of land use because it shows how land is used in different ways. It also links to the idea that I want to carry out within this topic that land is used in both negative and positive ways, power stations are negative uses and football/sports is a positive use. This image has influenced me because I think the way it is composed and the black and white effect adds to the meanings throughout the image.

This is another black and white image presented by John Davis. In the image we can see a street, the main focus on this street is the two buildings, on the left hand side there is an older victorian building and on the right hand side there is a modern building. By placing these buildings together it shows a contrast between old and modern. This image links to the exam topic land use because it shows how both old and new buildings exist and also shows how the older buildings are being established into modern buildings. Although this image is documented in the same black and white tones as the image it has a different atmosphere, there isn't a negative effect of these buildings like the power station in the previous image. This image has influenced the photographs I will take in my shoots because it extends my idea of comparing old buildings to new buildings.

David Spero

This is an image taken by David Spero within his focus on garden studies. This image was taken in the middle of a forest and the main focus is the man made home in the centre of the image. This image shows how someone has used objects to make a home for themselves. To an extent this image shows abandonment  to the land as it looks ugly and derelict. His work links to the exam title land use because it shows how land is used in a residential way but not just to build houses. In a way this mage explores the negative uses of land because this image looks ugly and derelict however, it can be seen in a positive way because the availability of the land has provided someone with a home. This image can influence my work because it shows how the landscape doesn't necessarily have to look inviting, if it tells a story it can still fit in with the exam title.

Spero presents several images of a garden, above is one of the images. In the image we can see a circular patch of grass that is surrounded by bushed and trees as well as garden ornaments. Placed on the ground is a spade and a grass trimmer, this shows how as well as building on the land humans also look after the land. This contrasts with the photographer Davies as he mainly shows how buildings negatively effect the land. Spero presents a positive land use within this image because the land is visible and there are no buildings spoiling it. His idea of documenting gardens relates to the exam topic land use because it shows the different ways people use their gardens. This image has influenced my work because although I am not interested in documenting gardens it still gives me the idea to document how different people use the land.

Dorothea Lange

This image was taken by Dorothea Lange within the Great Depression period. In the image we can see a woman and a boy getting water from a tap in the middle of a field, in the background there are tents which we assume is used for people's homes within the period. The land looks dry with no grass which can be considered to link in with the period, the Great Depression affected the US people and this can be mirrored in the conditions of the land. This image links to the exam topic land use because it shows how the land is used and not looked after in a time where people are only caring about money and their businesses. This image can link to my work because as well as documenting how the land is used I can also document the conditions the land is in as it may establish the meaning of the image more.

This is another image taken by Dorothea Lange in the Great Depression. In this image we can see men working on a farm. The ground is dry and cracked which can also represent the emotions within the Great Depression. This image shows how people use the land to work, this can be considered as a positive land use because there are no buildings being used unlike previous images from different photographers. I can use this image to influence my work because there are many job occupations that work within the land for positive reasons which I could document.

Land Use

I have chosen to assess land use as one of the topics I am interested in. Land use interests me because it is a way for me to establish my landscape photography skills and show how in the modern day we use the land around us. There are many ways that this can be explored, through housing, sport, transport and farming. Within these ideas I can show how land use has established throughout the years. As well as showing how it has established I can also show the different ways we use land, for example, we use land for roads and transportation but we also use land to build power stations that can be seen as a negative effect on the land. I can use this topic to show the negative effects of land use and the positive effects.

Sensory Photography

I have chose to look as sensory experience as a exam topic that interests me. There are many ways which senses can be used within photography, the focus of touch can lead us down the path of body parts and focusing on the texture of the object. Sound can also be explored by landscape photography, in an abandoned landscape we would assume there would be silence whereas within a busy landscape with lots of people we assume that it would be noisy with people talking. There are many routes I could go down within this topic but the main element that I would be interested in would be sound within landscapes and places because I am drawn to taking landscape images.

Overall, I want to continue with the land use exam title within my work because I have found a bigger interest within that topic than the sensory experience topic. Within land use I have more ideas to explore as I can travel around and take images of how we use the land in the modern day. As I said above I want to explore positive and negative ways we use the land in the modern day. There are various areas that use land for power stations which can be seen as negative but also the use of allotment sites which can be considered as positive.

Interim Evaluation

Interim Evaluation I carried out research by looking at different photographers who investigated land use and documented it in the way I w...
