Work Record 1; Waltham Abbey

Work Record 1; Waltham Abbey

Plans for Shoot:
The exam topic I am focussing on is land use, I want to show how land is used in Waltham Abbey within this shoot. Before shooting I have researched into Waltham Abbey to find out the types of land use within the town. Running through Waltham Abbey is the M25, there are various bridges that I can take birds eye view images of the road running underneath. This will show how land is used in the modern day, to help people get to places. I plan on also documenting the places that include graveyards, allotments and old buildings. The techniques I am going to use include landscape photograph settings on the camera, I will also take a tripod with me to capture perfectly framed landscape images.

Research Influence:
Within the exam title there were a few photographers listed, so for my first shoot I want to base the images off of one of these photographers, the photographer I have chosen is John Davies. His work shows the English industrial state in vast and detailed views. I hope to capture similar images in Waltham Abbey.

This image was taken by John Davies, it shows a crossroad within the English Industrial landscape. It shows how land has been used as the years and technology progresses, the formation of roads show how much the economy is changing and how people are now allowed to travel wherever they want, whenever they want. The buildings around the outside show how this is an industrial estate because of the housing present, the population is growing and the scale of housing shows it. Davies has taken this image from a height to show the wider view of the landscape, I can use this idea as there are bridges around Waltham Abbey that can help me capture a similar image. Most of Davies images are documented in black and white to show the atmosphere within the image, he uses both dark and light tones within his images, the lighter tones are more visible within this image showing that the land use here can be seen as positive. His work has influenced me at the beginning of this project because it has opened my thoughts more to the different land uses in the country.

Contact Sheet:
After carrying out my shoot at Waltham Abbey I have documented these images which I have presented in a contact sheet below:

Best Images:
Below are the best images I believe I have produced within this shoot:

I took this image from a bridge over the M25, I wanted to capture the moment that the cars were moving and going under the bridge because it shows how land is being used. The M25 circles London and is a important road which people use to travel, the significance is shown in the image because of the amount of cars on the road. I also chose to have the cars blurred because it shows their movements in both directions. I also documented it from this view because the nature either sides of the road is visible which shows how nature/land would've been destroyed to build this road, also the buildings in the background show how their are industrial estates with houses and buildings. My main idea behind this image is to show how land is used in the modern day as it mostly used to get people around, wherever you go in England there are always roads.

I chose to document this image because it shows a different type of land use which I can compare to images like the previous one. It shows a natural use of land as there is no roads and no buildings ruining this view of the nature within the area. Although this is a nature area, there is still a pathway that has been created in the centre of the image which shows that humans have still manipulated the nature in some way. I have chosen to document nature filled areas because I think this will work when comparing the industrial estate views to these views. My main focus in this shoot was to show how Waltham Abbey had very different uses of land which is represented in these two images alone.

Within this image I have shown how land is used to provide activities for the majority of the youth within the area. In the image we can see a skate park which is covered in graffiti giving the area a different vibe as graffiti can be seen as very intimidating. As well as showing how the land is used, it shows how buildings and structures can be manipulated by the younger generation in a disrespectful way, if the skate park hadn't been created this graffiti wouldn't have been made. This shows a positive use of land made negative because of manipulation. The image also shows how there are different ways of land use in the area that tailors for the population.

This image is similar to the previous one of the road which shows how structures which are considered as modern have been placed amongst nature. The building is extremely modern because of the glass used as previously made buildings didn't contain as much glass. It has been placed amongst nature which can be seen by the surrounding trees and river. This can be seen as a negative use of land because it has destroyed the nature by being placed there. There are a lot of topical issues that come with this land use because it shows how the government/council are taking away the nature and replacing it with buildings that can be considered as useless.

AO3: Record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions, reflecting critically on work and progress.

By looking through my images I believe that I have produced a bank of images that represents land use within Waltham Abbey well because it shows the modern uses of land and shows how structures have taken over the nature aspects of the land. I had hoped that this shoot would've gone better as I wanted to capture more of the land use. I had hoped to capture allotments but it was harder than expected because of the gates surrounding it. I chose to document these images in Waltham Abbey because it is where I live and I wanted to experiment more with finding the path I actually want to follow. I wanted to relate my work to John Davies because he is featured on the exam paper and he is the first photographer that I have looked at. I wanted to use his idea of documenting old structures vs new structures which to an extent can be seen within my work but I need to expand on this area a bit more.

With regards to my best images...
I believe that these four images are the best images that I have produced within this shoot because they show a wide range of land use in the area. As well as focusing on structures within the town I have also focused on the nature part of the town as this still shows how land is used and how humans are manipulating the land. There are some aspects of these images that I can improve on because I need to investigate into more modern and old structures within the land. The improvements that I need to make will be evident in the future shoots I will complete. For example, travelling into London will enable me to capture modern buildings as there have been a lot of refurbishments there but there are also older buildings that still remain.

AO2Explore and select appropriate resources, media, materials, techniques and processes, reviewing and refining ideas as work develops.

To capture these images I used a Nikon D3300, I also worked with a tripod when documenting the landscape images. The settings I used for my images stayed the same for the majority of my images with small changes. I used a high f stop, f/18, a quick shutter speed of 1/100 and the ISO stayed at 200. When documenting these types of images I think these were perfect settings to use because the image was capture quickly with a high depth of field and there was no noise within the images.

Next I took the images into Photoshop:

To edit this image I used the black and white filter to make the image completely black and white. The photographers that I have researched used different tones within the image to show negative and positive vibes which is what I have tried to do here. I have used lighter tones within the black and white filter to show the positive effect in this area, it is mainly nature which is seen as positive within the subject of land use. Also, I made the image black and white because it is similar to the photographers I am researching as the majority of them document their images in black and white to give a tonal effect. I like the image better in black and white because it adds more of an effect and focuses more on the actual land use rather than the vibrant colours originally within the image.

Similar to the image before I have edited this image to make it completely black and white. I chose to edit my images in this way because I think it will have a big effect on my forthcoming shoots as I want to document all my shoots in black and white as this will show more simply how different land uses are positive and negative. The tones within the image will show how the land use is negative or positive. In this image I have chosen to use darker tones because this man made structure of the motorway can be seen as a negative effect as it has destroyed the nature in this area. Personally, the image looks better in black and white as it blends the vehicles as one rather than each one standing out.

As well as simply editing some of the images in black and white I also used the idea of computer experiments to edit the images further.

To create this image I took two of the images that I have already edited in black and white and put them back into Photoshop. By creating a mask layer and using the black paintbrush I decreased the flow of the paintbrush and painted over the mask layer which left the image with this effect. I wanted to find a way to merge these two images together and I think this was the best way to do it. The images are very different and they show how land is used in both negative and positive ways which is why I wanted to combine them.

As well as using the black and white images I also used the coloured images and combined them. I think the coloured image is a lot better than the black and white one because as is shows the images more clearer and there is a clear difference between the road and the nature.

Whilst carrying out a computer experiment with these images I have also carried out a physical experiment to develop my work. I combined the pervious two images that I used in my computer experiments by cutting them out diagonally then merging them together to create this outcome.

I am happy with this outcome because similar to the computer experiment it shows how human and natural land uses come together to make up the world. I have kept the images in black and white because I thought the colours would distract the viewer away from the actual meaning of the image. By creating this physical experiment it shows how I am developing and refining my work as I have carried out experiments within my shoot.

AO4: Present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions and, where appropriate, makes connections between visual and other elements.

Here I have displayed the best images within the shoot that link to the land use. I wanted to link this shoot with John Davies which is why my images are in black and white, he shows the difference between the modern and old land use, I tried to display this in my work as well. I chose to include the computer experiment I carried out in my final images because I want to carry this on in my work, in my future shoots I can combine different pictures together which can result in similar outcomes to these images.I have also included the two original images because they are the best images from this entire shoot.

Progression:
To progress this shoot I am going to travel into London to document images of the modern buildings because this will contrast with what I have produced here as I have documented the transport and natural aspect of land use. Also, to progress further the images that I will take I want to produce more experiments within computer and physical because I believe that this will develop and refine my work more as it will give me a chance to initiate the meanings spread through my images.
