Work Record 3; Arsenal

Work Record 3; Arsenal

Plans for Shoot:
By researching around Arsenal I have discovered that I can document images of the new stadium to show modern land uses but I can also document the old Arsenal stadium as it has been changed into flats. My main idea in this area is to show how different buildings are now compared to what they were like before-hand. Also, located around Arsenal are modern buildings which I can also incorporate within my shoots to link it back to the modern buildings I took in Vauxhall. I also have plans to create computer and physical experiments involving this shoot.

Research Influence:
The main photographer that has influenced my ideas within this shoot is John Davies, he documents the British landscape and shows the differences between new and older buildings.

For example, in this image we can see an older building located on the left and a modern building on the right. We can already establish the different uses of each of the buildings just by looking at the image, the right building is most likely used for offices and the left building is most likely abandoned or with a less important use. The structure differences between the two images can be seen because the modern buildings consists of glass whereas the older building contains less windows and more actual building. This image shows land use because it shows how land use had progressed over the years and shows how more older buildings are being replaced with ones like the right building. John Davies work has influenced me within this shoot because I am going to be documenting a modern stadium compared to the older stadium which has been replaced with flats.

Contact Sheet:
The images below located within the contact sheet is the photographs I have documented within Arsenal...

Best Images:
These images below are the best images that I have taken within this shoot...

In this image we can see the front of the current Arsenal stadium, this image contains a lot of symbolism because of the Arsenal symbol that stands out in the middle. I chose to take this image because it shows what a modern stadium looks like, we can see that this building is modern because of the glass used within the structure. This shows how land is used to create a modern building used for sport. As well as focusing on the land use aspect I have also focused on the structure aspect of this like in my previous shoots. The absence of nature within this image shows how London is very modern and lacks nature, it is made up of concrete and buildings like this.

This image is similar to the last one but I got closer to the stadium to focus on the Arsenal symbol. It shows, like the previous image, that modern buildings have taken over the land use and these types of buildings can be see all around London. This image can be seen as an abstract image because we wouldn't normally look at this building from this angle but I wanted to capture all angles and use them within my work. I want to use this image alongside the previous image to create a double exposure effect within Photoshop. By capturing this image it shows how I am taking images from all different angles to capture the best shots.

The focus of my shoot was on the Arsenal stadium, but surrounding the stadium were these modern buildings which I used to my advantage because they link to the modern buildings I documented in my previous shoot. I think this is one of my best image because although they are located next to a famous building they have importance to an extent, the sun is shining directly onto them showing their importance. These are the types of buildings we see all around London acting as flats or sometimes offices. By documenting the modern buildings it shows again how there is a lack of nature in these places and how more of these types of building are forming.

This image is of the older Arsenal stadium, although this isn't clear within the actual image. I chose to document this image in this way as it still shows resemblance of a stadium but it becomes clear that they are now flats because there are now balconies. This shows a different type of land use as it is an old building which has been changed into a modern use, more flats are being built over London and this building has just been changed into them. The deeper meaning of the building has resulted in it not being knocked down although it's use has changed. This image goes well with the image of the new Arsenal stadium because it shows how different the structures are and establishes the clear difference between new and old.

AO3: Record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions, reflecting critically on work and progress.

By looking through the images I have taken I think that I have produced a bank of images that works well within land use. I have documented the difference between the old and new buildings within Arsenal by taking images of the new and old stadium. There is a clear difference between the modern and old structures in this shoot because the modern structures have more glass windows unlike the older structures which lacks the glass. The only element that I didn't capture is the nature aspect which I would've like to explore more to use within the experimentation of my shoot. The lack of nature in the area made it harder to achieve this anyway. I think my work links to John Davies because he shows both old buildings and new buildings which is what I have explored here. To develop my work further I need to edit these images in black and white which will link to John Davies work even more.

With regards to my best images...
I think these four images that I have produced are the best within this shoot because they show the different types of land use which is the main idea for this project. My main focus in this shoot was distinguishing the difference between the old and new Arsenal stadium which I believe I was successful at doing. As well as doing this, I also documented the modern buildings in the area because it links to my previous shoot in Vauxhall where I documented the modern buildings. The main improvements I need to show within my work is the nature aspect of land use which can help when making the double exposure images in Photoshop. Everything else in my shoots so far has worked well regarding camera settings and composition.

AO2Explore and select appropriate resources, media, materials, techniques and processes, reviewing and refining ideas as work develops.

To take these images I used a Nikon D3300. Regarding camera settings my camera was set at, f/20, 1/20 and ISO 200, these settings worked well with this shoot because I needed a wide depth of field as majority of my images are classed as landscape images. To improve these settings further I could've changed them around when focusing on buildings close up. The settings helped when achieving good quality as there is not noise in any of my images.

Next I took some of my images into Photoshop...

To edit this image I used the curve layer to darken the image to increase the details of the structure. I used the black and white filter to de-colourise the image. As shown in the image I used the darker tones because this building is considered as a negative land use and this is presented in the atmosphere created by darker tones.

As well as just editing the images in black and white I am also experimenting with other tools within Photoshop because this shows how I am refining and developing my work. I used the three images above to create a panoramic shot of the Arsenal stadium because it gives a wider view. The images combined give a better view of this stadium which is better than just looking at each individual shot. To establish this image further I could make it black and white or put an effect on the image.

In my previous shoots I have experimented with double exposure so I wanted to carry it on in this shoot. I picked two images within my shoot that worked well together and put them into Photoshop. I used a mask layer and the paintbrush to gradually merge the layers. This is an example of the double exposure effect that I mastered in my previous shoots. I created a colour and a black and white version of this image because the majority of the photographers that I have looked at document their work in black and white.

Similar to the previous image of double exposure I experimented with these two images. The first image is of the new Arsenal stadium and the second image is of the old Arsenal stadium which has been turned into flats. I chose to merge these two images because they show how land use is established through time. Again I have presented this image in both colour and black and white because of the photographers I have looked at.

AO4: Present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions and, where appropriate, makes connections between visual and other elements.

These images below are the images that I have presented within my shoot that I think are the best response to land use. I have chosen to document all these images in black and white because it links to the photographers that I am looking at e.g. John Davies and Eric De Mare. These images link back to all of my photographers because they look at the difference between old and modern land uses which is what i have documented here. I have chosen to include the double exposure images within my response because it shows how I am developing my work further by using computer experiments. Also, I have included the black and white image of the panorama that I created because it shows a wider view of the stadium and of how the land is used.

Progression:
To progress my work further I am going to complete another shoot in Waltham Abbey where I experiment with camera settings when taking images of the M25. I want to experiment with the settings to create different scales of blur on the moving cars. As well as taking images of the M25 I am going to also document the nature aspects of Waltham Abbey so it links well with the man-made and natural land uses I have looked at. Regarding this shoot I need to compete a physical experiment on the images to refine and develop my work further.
